Alphonso Pierce correspondence and photograph, 1864 March-November.

Bulk of the correspondence was written by Union soldier Alphonso Pierce. Locations include Camp Baker in Washington, D.C., camp near Petersburg, Virginia, Sycamore Church, Virginia, and Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia. There are also two letters by James W. Dockendorf; two notes by Calvin Dearborn (served in the same regiments and was also captured) written from Camp Parole Annapolis, Md; a letter by Charles H. Dearborn (son of Calvin); and a letter written by V.F. Pierce dated Augusta Me Jan 28 1865 to the Commanding Offficer Fortress Monroe. Includes a tintype photograph of Alphonso Pierce as well as computer typescript transcriptions and photocopies of the original letters by Marjorie Gahan Beardsley.

Alphonso Pierce, son of Veranus F. and Louisa Reed (Merrill) Pierce, was born in Windsor, Maine, 29 April 1845, and died on 26 November 1864. Alphonso enlisted in the Union Army in February 1864 and served in Company 1 of the D.C. Cavalry then transferred to Company G of 1st Cavalry in February 1865.
